How much do you know about head lice? These tiny parasites are more mysterious than people realize! Then when they hit the home, families aren’t sure what head lice shampoos and treatments to use!
My Hair Helpers aims to educate families on head lice, as there is a lot of misinformation out there. We also provide a wide range of treatment solutions, including head lice shampoos, conditioners and repellent sprays.
In this post, we’re going to cover 10 lice blunders to avoid. We find that some people do these things without realizing they can cause more harm than good.
10 Things to Avoid When Dealing with Lice
1. Don’t use extra amounts of lice medication. This won’t treat the lice faster and can instead expose your child to more chemicals than what is safe.
2. Avoid over-the-counter head lice products. Many OTC lice removal products contain harsh chemicals like insecticides and pesticides. Instead, choose all-natural lice removal products that have been tested for efficacy. All head lice shampoos, conditioners and sprays from My Hair Helpers include a guarantee.
3. Don’t repeat the same treatment more than 2-3 times. Doing this can cause your child to build a resistance to the ingredients, making lice more difficult to treat. Usually, a max of two treatments are recommended. If these don’t work, you may have to try something different.
4. Don’t stress over cleaning your home. Lice can only live 1-2 days off a human host and generally do not spread through surfaces. Instead, do some light vacuuming and wash sheets and towels in hot water.
5. Avoid using more than one head lice medication at a time. Again, this won’t treat the lice any faster and can instead cause irritation and other problems, especially when ingredients mix together.
6. Steer clear of Lindane shampoo. Lindane is no longer recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the overuse of this product can be toxic to the brain and other parts of the nervous system.
7. Resist keeping head lice a secret. We realize that people feel embarrassed when they get lice, but hiding these cases can lead to bigger outbreaks and re-infestations. If your child gets lice, tell the school nurse and others you have been around in recent weeks.
8. Skip the home remedies. Most home remedies for lice are ineffective, messy and need to be used multiple times before they show any results. Rather than saturating your child’s hair in mayonnaise or olive oil, you can use one simple product.
9. Don’t keep your child home from school. Once your child receives head lice treatment, they can return to their classroom. It takes 4-6 weeks for symptoms of lice to appear, so your child has already been around their classmates with lice. This is why communication is key.
10. Don’t panic. As unsettling as lice are, they are not harmful to your family’s health. With the right head lice shampoo, you can remove lice and prevent them from taking over your home. Lice are 100% treatable.
