Do you have a head lice professional coming to your house for an in-home head lice treatment appointment? If so, you’ve made a great decision for your family! My Hair Helpers offers both home and salon appointments, and we know that some work better than others for our clients.
The advantage of a home appointment is that your child gets to stay in a comfortable and familiar space. No traveling is required, which can help ease your child’s anxiety. Also, you don’t have to worry about finding the right products, testing them out on your child and making a mess. We will handle everything from start to finish, and all products are made from safe, 100% natural ingredients.
Our home appointments are designed to be stress-free, but there are some things you can do to make it even more positive for you and your child! Below are our best tips for preparing your space for an in-home hair lice treatment appointment.
Make Sure Everyone is Home
We know that families are busy, but it’s important for everyone to be home during the visit. This process does take time and may even involve multiple family members. The only way to beat lice is to make sure that everyone is lice free. This is why we recommend a complete head lice check for anyone suspected to have lice.
Have Clean Hair
Clean hair is a must for lice removal. Otherwise, hair products like hair spray, gels and mousse can make it more difficult to check for lice and apply the product. The simplest way to plan for your appointment is by having everyone shower in advance. Plus, wet hair is easier to comb through and easier to check for head lice.
Set Up a Comfortable Space
Remember, removing head lice takes time. Keep your child comfortable by sitting them in a sturdy, mid-back, upright chair. We often recommend setting up a ‘lice station’ that has good lighting, good ventilation and plenty of space to move around. Your head lice technician will bring their own supplies, but a spacious, well-lit room is still helpful.
Dress Appropriately
We recommend dressing your child in an oversized top that leaves the neck exposed, such as a loose-fitting t-shirt or tank top. It’s common for head lice to hang out on the neck, so you want your technician to get a clear view of this area. Save the nice shirts and turtlenecks for another day.
Provide a Distraction
Young children often have trouble sitting still, so have some entertainment on hand to keep them busy. Examples of things your child can do while receiving their hair lice treatment are:
- Read a book
- Watch videos on an iPad or smartphone
- Watch a movie on TV
- Listen to music
- Play a handheld game
Even adults sometimes need a distraction, so keep your phone, magazines, etc. within reach.
