Head lice infestations tend to get the same response as the stomach flu. Parents go into a panic and want to quarantine their sick child. After all, no one wants a house full of sick children!
The same is true for head lice, probably even more so, as they take longer to get rid of. A house full of itchy heads sounds like a parental nightmare. But, keeping one child away from the family isn’t exactly practical. Kids can’t help if they get lice, just as they can’t help if they get sick.
Fortunately, there are ways to protect siblings from getting head lice. However, lice are contagious, so prevention isn’t always successful. The key is to be proactive rather than reactive. This way, if a sibling does end up with a louse, you can treat it right away.
Step One: Get Everyone Checked for Head Lice
If one person in the family has head lice, there’s a possibility that someone else has it, too. It takes time for symptoms to show up, and until they do, lice can be transferred to new hosts. So, the first step is to find out who has head lice and who doesn’t. Do not rely on symptoms only. Get everyone checked by a head lice expert.
Head lice treatment is not necessary for those without lice. That said, you’re not in the clear just yet. Each day, check everyone using the wet combing method. As long as the treatment is working, and you haven’t noticed any more lice, you can gradually increase the days between head checks.

Step Two: Prevent the Spread of Head Lice
Checking all siblings for head lice is a great way to stay on top of the infestation. You can also take steps around the home to reduce the likelihood of the pests spreading.
- Wash sheets, bedding, towels, etc. that have been used in the past 24-48 hours
- Avoid touching each other’s hair
- Don’t share combs, hair accessories, hats, etc.
- Avoid play wrestling
- Treat everyone with a lice prevention product
Lice are contagious and extremely common, so don’t panic if you find a louse or nit in your child’s hair. In fact, be happy that you caught it early on! While lice can’t always be prevented, there are ways to lessen the severity of the infestation and maintain a happy home.
